Red Cross launches new Earthquake App

Red Cross launches new Earthquake App

(KFVS) - The American Red Cross has launched their official Earthquake App, putting lifesaving information right in the hands of people who live in or who visit earthquake prone areas.

The free app, available in English or Spanish, is the third in a series created by the American Red Cross. They say it is available for both iPhone and Android platforms. The app comes on the heels of the highly successful First Aid and Hurricane apps, which have been downloaded more than 1 million times.

“This newest app gives instant access to local and real time information on what to do before, during and after earthquakes.” said Jamie Koehler, Red Cross Emergency Service Director for the Southeast Missouri Chapter “Residents will receive earthquake notifications and can monitor activity where other family and friends reside. People who do not live in earthquake-prone areas can have peace of mind knowing you’ll have instant information about loved ones.”

Illinois Extension offers tips on flash flooding

Illinois Extension offers tips on flash flooding

CHAMPAIGN, IL (KFVS) - The remnants of Hurricane Issac will be making it's way into Illinois on Friday and Saturday.

Officials at the National Weather Service say that the drought conditions will actually exacerbate flash flooding.  Ground that is dry and hard will not allow the water to soak in, at least initially, thus contributing to rapid runoff and flash flooding.

The University of  Illinois Extension is offering these tips on dealing with flash flooding:

Prepare Your Office: If your office has a basement or is otherwise prone to flooding, now would be a good time to make sure that sump pumps (if any) are operating properly.

Events:  If you have events scheduled for Saturday or Sunday, keep an eye on the weather.

Preparing your home:  Make sure that all valuable items are up off the floor, and emergency kits are up to date.

IDNR urges caution at fishing tournaments due to hot weather, drought

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - Due to drought conditions and hot weather, Illinois Department of Natural Resources asks fishing tournament organizers to add extra precautions regarding the catch and handling of fish.

When considering ways to protect fish caught during tournaments this summer, the IDNR Division of Fisheries recommends that tournament organizers consider:

  • Reducing the length of the tournament and lowering the number of fish that can be brought to the weigh-in
  • Maintain conditions in the live well
  • Limiting the number of bags used to bring fish from live-wells to tournament scales
