IDNR offers safety tips for hunters

IDNR offers safety tips for hunters

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding all hunters to make safety a top priority when in the field this year.

Fall Archery season opens Oct. 1 for deer and turkey throughout Illinois.

According to the IDNR, while hunting is one of the safest forms of outdoor recreation, thanks to the diligence of law-abiding and safety-minded hunters, incidents do happen. Last year in Illinois, there were 26 hunting incidents, one of them fatal. There have been six hunting incidents reported in the state so far in 2012.

"Whether in a blind or a tree stand, it is crucial that hunters are acutely aware of their surroundings including fellow hunters. Never take a shot without knowing what is beyond your target and always use the proper working equipment when ascending or descending from a tree stand,” said IDNR Director Marc Miller

IDNR celebrates Earth Day in the Parks

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says more than 875 students will visit the Illinois Department of Natural Resources state parks in April and May for the 6th Annual Earth Day in the Parks event.

Earth Day in the Parks is an initiative of the IDNR to introduce students to environmental stewardship.

"Students participating in Earth Day in the Parks will have an opportunity to perform meaningful natural resources stewardship activities, including planting trees, planting native wildflowers, developing amphibian breeding pools, building and installing fish attractors and a number of other activities," said IDNR Director Marc Miller.

Sponsored by the IDNR Office of Strategic Services and Office of Land Management, Earth Day offers students the chance to get outdoors and work in nature. Students and teachers are encouraged to return to the park to study the effects of their work.
