ISP releases Union Pacific railroad crossing detail

(KFVS) - The Union Pacific Railroad, the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies are partnering in an effort to lower fatalities at railroad crossings in the Illinois State Police District 13 area.

Even one of these tragic events is too many. Highway-rail crash statistics for 2012 indicate that Illinois had 89 crashes at public crossings. Twenty five people were killed and another 34 seriously injured. Illinois has over 7,300 miles of track with 7,780 public crossings and 4,536 private crossings.

Car Craft Street Machine Nationals returns to the DuQuoin Fairgrounds

DUQUOIN, IL (KFVS)  -  Get ready to start your engines! The Car Craft Street Machine Nationals returns to the Motorhead Mecca in the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds on June 28 - 30, for the first time since 1998. 

The Street Machine Nationals had been held at the DuQuoin Fairgrounds for 13 years in a row, until its run ended 15 years ago. This national celebration of horsepower and dream machines will showcase high-performance street machines, hot rods, and street trucks from across the nation. 

There won't be any shortage of things to keep you busy, with the Performance Marketplace for the latest aftermarket parts, the burnout challenge, dyno challenge, as well as more than 40 pro-judged awards to be given out. There will also be a Miss Street Machine contest being held as well.

Park Street Road reopened at Franklin/Perry Co. line

Park Street Road reopened at Franklin/Perry Co. line

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Franklin County Highway Department Officials say they have re-opened Park Street Road at the Franklin/Perry County Line on Monday, June 3.

As of 2:30 p.m., the highway department says Peach Orchard Road has also been reopened at the Franklin/Perry County line. They say all county roads are open at this time.

Minor injuries after semi, car crash on IL Rt. 154

PERRY COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - IL Route 154 was closed for over an hour on Monday, May 27 around 4:25 a.m. after a crash at Albers Road.

According to the Illinois State Police, Cheyenne N. Conner, 19, from Mulkeytown was driving a blue 2003 Kia Spectra eastbound on IL Rt. 154 and Jeffery T. Mullins, 47, from Mt. Vernon was driving a red 2006 Freightliner pulling a bulk hauling trailer westbound near Albers Road.

ISP said Conner told them she was adjusting her car radio and they say she crossed the center line, hitting the Freightliner in a partial overlap head on crash.

Conner’s car came to a rest on the north shoulder of the road and the Freightliner came to a rest on the south shoulder of the road.

IL Rt. 154 was closed for about an hour and a half for clean up.

Conner was cited for driving an uninsured vehicle and driving in the wrong lane. According to ISP, she had minor injuries. They say Mullins was uninjured.

IDOT suspends non-emergency road work during Memorial Day weekend

(KFVS) - With thousands of drivers expected to travel on state roadways over the Memorial Day weekend, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Friday that roadwork will be suspended where possible this weekend to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

IDOT is also providing advance notice of lane closures that will be in place for the holiday weekend to aid motorists' travel plans and boost safety.

"Memorial Day weekend historically marks the unofficial start of summer, with thousands of motorists expected to hit the road this weekend," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. "We want to ensure the safety of the motoring public and help them get to their destinations by suspending all non-emergency road work where possible to reduce potential roadway congestion, improve safety and traffic flow."

Hearing on redistricting in Illinois is May 30

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host a public hearing next week to discuss legislative redistricting in Illinois.

The hearing is May 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carbondale Civic Center, 200 S. Illinois Ave.

Ryan Blitstein, president of “CHANGE Illinois!,” will outline a proposed constitutional amendment and hear ideas and suggestions from the public about the group’s proposal to create a citizens commission to do redistricting. Under current law, state lawmakers draw their own district lines.

Recently, the group launched a drive to finalize the text of an amendment before starting a petition drive asking voters to put it on the November 2014 ballot. Blitstein is touring the state explaining the plan and collecting reactions and suggestions.

Motorcycle Awareness campaign launched for Motorcycle Awareness Month in May

(KFVS) - For the 30th year, May has been proclaimed Motorcycle Awareness Month in Illinois as part of a statewide campaign to reduce motorcycle crash fatalities and injuries.

Governor Pat Quinn, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police, Gold Wing Road Riders Association, and A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education joined in support of campaigns to urge Illinois motorists to "Start Seeing Motorcycles" and "Look Twice - Save a Life." The safety coalition urged all drivers to share the road and recognized volunteers who participate in the annual Windshield Washing Project to raise awareness.
