'Love thy Neighbor' charity run coming to Ill. in May

DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) - The 5th annual southern Illinois "Love thy Neighbor" charity run will be held in Du Quoin on May 10. 

The run will be held at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds Labor Pavilion starting at 6 p.m. 

Proceeds from the run will go to the DQ District #300 Bully Prevention Program. 

Pre-registration entry fee is $15 for competitive events and $5 for each fun event.

Rep. Bradley encourages students to enter 'Doodle 4 Google' contest

MARION, IL (KFVS) - State Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion) invited local students to participate in Google's "Doodle 4 Google" contest for the opportunity to have their artwork featured on the Google homepage.

Those feature could receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant from their school.

"The Doodle 4 Google contest is an innovative way to encourage students to demonstrate their creativity," Bradley said. "We have a great many talented students in our community, and I encourage all of them to take advantage of this opportunity to help fund their college education, while supporting their current school at the same time."

Doodles are the fun versions of the Google logo that appear on the Google homepage to recognize special events and people. The theme for this year's contest is "My Best Day Ever..." and students are invited to submit their entries by mail or online by March 22.

(KFVS) - The Illinois Gun Owner and Lobby Day will include a rally and march for right to carry in Illinois on Wednesday, March 6.

The group will be leaving from Marion, Ill. to travel to Springfield for the event. A schedule of events includes:

  • 7 a.m.Depart Sam’s Club parking lot, 2709 Walton Way, Marion, IL just west of I-57 exit 54 park at north edge of lot.
  • 10:30 a.m.Lunch Golden Corral, Springfield, IL  $11.00 includes meal-drink-tax-tip
  • 11:45 a.m.Registration/Rally, Prairie Capital Convention Ctr, 1 Convention Center Plaza
  • 1 p.m. March to the State Capitol to lobby legislators
  • 4 p.m. Reception at Vinegar Hill Mall - 107 W. Cook St. - 2 blocks south of Capitol Bldg.
  • 5 p.m. Buses load up at Vinegar Hill Mall for trip home

Calling all young artists: The Jr. Duck Stamp Contest is underway at Crab Orchard refuge

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now accepting entries for the 2013 Illinois Junior Duck Stamp Contest, which is administered by the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.

Entries must be postmarked by March 15, 2013.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program is unique in its blending of science and art. It engages children in the study of waterfowl and habitat conservation as well as migration. The program guides students, using scientific and wildlife observation principles, to communicate visually what they have learned through an entry in their state’s Junior Duck Stamp art contest.

This conservation education program is open to any child in kindergarten through high school. Southern Illinois teachers can contact the Refuge about outreach programs and resources, offered free of charge, in support of the Junior Duck Stamp program.

Recycle old refrigerators, freezers through Ameren for a chance to win shopping spree

(KFVS) - Ameren Illinois will be collecting old, energy guzzling refrigerators and freezers from residents.

Those getting rid of their appliances will be eligible to receive $50, save $150 or more a year and have a chance to win a $2,000 shopping spree.

To be eligible for the $2,000 shopping spree, eligible refrigerators and freezers must be picked up by ActOnEnergy no later than March 31. The $2,000 prize will allow the winner to purchase one or more Energy Star certified appliances of the winner’s choice.

When residential customers schedule a free pickup of an eligible refrigerator or freezer, ActOnEnergy will make certain that old unit is given new life.

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Building Healthier Communities: A Leader's Forum will be held on Tuesday, February 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carbondale Civic Center.

Approximately 150 leaders from Alexander, Hardin, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Randolph, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, and Union Counties will learn about the connection between improving health and the economic development of the community. They will also receive suggestions for improving health through changes in the workplace which make the healthy choice the easy choice. And finally, community leaders will learn about some exciting projects already underway that are having a positive impact on this community.

The keynote speaker is Ms. Laura Minzer of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce. She will be talking about why worksite wellness is so important.
