Illinois State Treasurer reminds victims about flood aid

Illinois State Treasurer reminds victims about flood aid

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - With the recent flooding throughout the state, Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is reminding flood victims that aid is available through the treasurer’s Disaster Recovery Linked Deposit Program.

According Rutherford, the program helps residents, businesses and farmers get  low-interest loans to recover from weather-related damage to their property.

After a loan is approved, Rutherford says the state makes a deposit into the financial institution which helps lower the interest rate to the borrower, effectively making the repairs more affordable.

The maximum interest rate for qualifying borrowers is 2.36 percent for a two-year loan and 2.69 percent for a three-year loan for the month of April 2013.  The rate is locked in for the duration of the period.  The program caps the interest rate at 3 percent for qualified borrowers at participating financial institutions.

Illinois Extension offers tips on flash flooding

Illinois Extension offers tips on flash flooding

CHAMPAIGN, IL (KFVS) - The remnants of Hurricane Issac will be making it's way into Illinois on Friday and Saturday.

Officials at the National Weather Service say that the drought conditions will actually exacerbate flash flooding.  Ground that is dry and hard will not allow the water to soak in, at least initially, thus contributing to rapid runoff and flash flooding.

The University of  Illinois Extension is offering these tips on dealing with flash flooding:

Prepare Your Office: If your office has a basement or is otherwise prone to flooding, now would be a good time to make sure that sump pumps (if any) are operating properly.

Events:  If you have events scheduled for Saturday or Sunday, keep an eye on the weather.

Preparing your home:  Make sure that all valuable items are up off the floor, and emergency kits are up to date.

Ill. counties awarded solid waste enforcement grants

ILLINOIS (KFVS) - Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Interim Director John Kim announced that the Illinois EPA awarded Solid Waste Enforcement grants to 19 local governments across Illinois.

The grants are to be used to conduct inspections at permitted pollution control facilities and to investigate citizen complaints about illegal dumping.

Director Kim says the grants will provide local governments the opportunity to target issues in their community that need attention and that they will be able to respond more efficiently to solid waste related problems. Kim says this will benefit the Agency and the public greatly.

Jackson County, Ill. has a total budget for the project set at $105,864 and was awarded $78,131 worth of grants.

Perry County, Ill. has a total budget for the project of $69,811 and was awarded $36,169 in grant money.
