Many pause to honor fallen Du Quoin Fire Fighter

Many in the Heartland paused to remember a fallen hero. 22-year-old Du Quoin firefighter Corey Shaw was killed Friday when a wall collapsed on him during a massive fire on the Pinckneyville square.

On Wednesday many paid tribute to Shaw and said their final goodbyes during his funeral and burial services. Family, friends and fellow first responders gathered at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin to honor Shaw.

Bagpipes played as fellow Du Quoin Firefighters carried Shaw's casket, draped in an American flag, into the church. Meanwhile, dozens of first responders looked on as his casket passed by family and friends.

Many who stood at attention were from southern Illinois. Others came from as far away as Chicago, New York and Canada to remember Shaw.

One firefighter from Swansea Illinois says no matter the distance, everybody in the fire service is a brother.

Fallen firefighter honored in Du Quoin

Emergency responders from across the region along with family and friends honored a fallen firefighter Wednesday.

Corey Shaw, 22, was killed Friday in the line of duty when a wall collapsed on him during a massive fire on the Pinckneyville square.

Officials with the Perry County Sheriff's Department in Pinckneyville say the Antique Mall and the century-old Opera House are a complete loss.

Shaw had been a volunteer with the Du Quoin Fire Department since 2010 and was the son of Du Quoin Fire Chief Bob Shaw.

Shaw was given a hero's sendoff in Du Quoin at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Friends may make memorials to an education fund for Camryn Ray Shaw and will be accepted at the funeral home.
