New rules for this year's Street Machine Nationals

DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS)- A legendary event makes its way back into Du Quoin after a 13 year absence.

The Car Craft Magazine Street Machine Nationals features hundreds of classic cars but has a history of creating a mess for the city.

"It got to be a crazy time, it was out of control really," said car enthusiast James Smith.

Known for its hardcore horsepower, cool classic cars with plenty of big block engines, the Car Craft Magazine Street Machine Nationals brings out the biggest car enthusiasts.

"It's just a really good time to see all of the cars, thousands and thousands of cars gather in one area, it's just hard to believe," said Smith.

But police say it also brings out the biggest problems the city has ever had to deal with, from drunken tirades to property destruction and public nudity.

Four Seasons Gardening Program starts with Fall Series

PINCKNEYVILLE, IL (KFVS) - The fall series of University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening program, which focuses on environmental stewardship and backyard food production, gets underway this month.

The first session of the series is titled, "Some Like it HOT: Plants for Hot, Dry Areas." The program is offered twice – on August 20 at 1 p.m. at the Perry County Extension Office in Pinckneyville, Illinois and again on August 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jackson County Extension Office in Murphysboro, Illinois.

Landscapes often include challenging sites where the heat is high and the water is dry. Areas next to driveways or near south facing buildings can frustrate even the most seasoned gardener. Before you consider giving up on plants and ordering asphalt, discover the diversity of plants that thrive in hot dry sites.
